Tips/Tricks-3dsmax: Sphere is the new Box

spherebox-only.jpgNext time you are box modeling, try Sphere modeling– but with a Box…

By adding the “Spherify Modifier” to a box primitive you can create a sphere that is made entirely of quads. This is not possible with the sphere primitive because it has triangles at the top. There are many reasons this is a great idea. here are some of them:

  • There are no triangles at the top and bottom (commonly called the poles)
  • The quads are perfect of you are moving to/from ZBrush
  • It greatly simplifies the UVW Unwrapping process

  3. Thanks for posting this, it’s going to help me on a current project a lot.

    Is it possible to use this method to unwrap the model, then tessellate the box-sphere, and have it update the uvw unwrap you just did on the lower poly model?
